Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coastline stretches more than 1,800 kilometres and remains one of the world's least-explored reef systems. The new Red Sea destination has opened a string of island resorts built to strict sustainability standards, with coral gardens starting metres from the beach.
Snorkelling and diving are the headline acts — expect turtles, rays, dolphins and untouched coral walls. Onshore, the dunes and volcanic landscapes of the Harrat fields make for striking excursions.
Access is via the dedicated Red Sea International Airport south of Umluj. Resorts are high-end; independent travellers can base themselves in Umluj or Yanbu for boat trips to the outer reefs.
